Artist Biography

As far as she can remember, Arlene Buster’s devotion to painting emerged at a very young age. As told by her parents and her grandmother, whenever they would check up on her, they would find her painting or drawing by herself, in the quiet corners of her home. Her devotion to art was further nourished when her mother took her to inquire about her very first private art class. When she graduated from high school, she pursued her art at Montclair State University, earning a bachelor's degree in painting and drawing before attending the Academy of Art University. However, her journey was interrupted as she battled personal struggles with illness that made it impossible for her to pursue her art and even accomplish everyday tasks. Throughout those painful struggles, she thought a lot about the artist Frida Kahlo and the struggles she endured.

When Arlene began walking and using her hands again, it was a significant crossroad in her life. At the present time, in spite of some considerable impairments and pain she still experiences, she is much better. Painting for Arlene is personal, especially now, for the reason that it permits her to escape the painful obstacles in life and imparts her with purpose. The hours become minutes while she narrates her stories with her brushes filled with paint.

Artist Statement

In the words of Marshall McLuhan, “Technology is just not a happenstance and not just something that got there when nobody was noticing and so, we are responsible for our technologies and the effects of our technologies, as we are responsible for tidying up our grammar.”

I have created my series Absence of Privacy because I believe everyone has a right to privacy. Likewise, I believe that most unscripted moments in life, should remain unscripted and free from a world of webcams. To illustrate the ways in which webcams have invaded our lives, I have painted twelve paintings with oil on canvas. I paint the figure in everyday settings as they are being watched through a surveillance camera or webcam.

My interest in this topic began when I created a still-life oil painting of a webcam for my Contemporary Painting class in 2011. It felt eerie and overpowering. It was agitating to see a webcam up-close staring at me. For this reason, I began reflecting on the multitude of cameras that were gawking at me throughout the day. Prior to this, I had never given this much attention. As I read articles about privacy abuses, I felt compelled to communicate these issues through painting.

Below are Barney’s Artist Biography, his Artist Statement, along with 25 of his oil paintings.  We hope that you will take the time to read Barney’s information and to take a look at his artwork.

Artist Biography:

Barney Levitt has been creating ‘pictures’ ever since he was old enough to grip a crayon and scribble on his parents’ living room walls. He was given his first oil set when he was 10 years old, which set him on his destined path to becoming a professional artist. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from S.U.N.Y at Oswego, he never looked back.

He was greatly influenced by the works of the Dutch and Flemish masters and his highly detailed works in realism captures the viewers’ attention, for their unique and often humorous content. Humor and a strong narrative are key ingredients in his work, and he often uses a bright color palette in his paintings. His work ranges from classical still life set-ups to quirkier narrative pieces that invite the viewer to create a narrative of their own.

Titles are important to Barney as they give the viewer better insight into what he’s trying to convey. His work combines naturalistic detail with quirky offbeat compositions that often juxtapose ordinary objects in ways the viewer doesn’t expect.

Barney is a signature member of The National Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society (NOAPS), A Copley Society of Art Master, a member of The International Guild of Realism (IGOR), and Oil Painters of America (OPA). He is represented by several New England galleries.

Artist Statement:

The goal of my work is to capture the viewers' attention through humor and narrative. My work is highly detailed realism but often with an interesting twist which I hope will elicit a smile, or invite wonder and offer a narrative to spark the viewers' imagination. My subject matter incorporates natural objects like bird and wildlife, to beach stones, feathers, and other found objects. I look for material that evokes a sense of nostalgia; classic board games and antiques. My paintings are created layer by layer, as the details build slowly with each successive layer. I have a keen eye for detail and no detail is left undone in my work. Painting is my way of expressing my unique view of the world and my compositions often border on the surreal. The scenes often can't exist in reality, but the photographic detail would tell you otherwise.

Artist Biography:

B. Dumont Renard was born in France in 1957. She signs her paintings B. Dumont Renard, sometimes BDR. She received her first easel at the age of 16 and began to paint under the expert advice of a painter from her region. At 18, her first exhibitions took place at the Pays de Salers in Cantal and at the Château de Val in Auvergne. During the next decade, she took classes at the ABC in Paris, experimented with various techniques and began to exhibit on a regular basis. At the same time, she worked on the creation of posters, wine labels and commissions for the State, in particular for various town halls. She also begin to experiment with illustration, mosaic, sculpture and eventually abstraction.

In addition, Elisabeth has an affinity for cats. She has created over two hundred cat drawings and acrylic paintings on paper, wood and canvas. Her cats brighten up her life and her work and this series of cats has been presented in many exhibitions, salons, etc. in France and abroad, including Tokyo, Seoul, Milan, New York, Shanghai, San Roan and Spain to name a few.

In 2009, she became a member of the International Collective of Artists Art Zoom (CIAAZ) in order to open up new horizons at the international, of which she has seen much success. She has also won awards for her work in numerous exhibitions and been published in numerous books and magazines.

Artist Statement:

The media I use for my art consists in superimposing several layers of resin, with long drying times between each layer, in order to obtain glazes. It is the search for a special light and effects of depth that guide me in my process. Breaking with the classic conception of painting according to which the reflection outshines the vision, my work is noteworthy for its dark tones associated with luminous contrasts and is based on the demonstration of the way in which a color escapes monochromy. I would like the viewer to get lost inside my paintings and my work is an invitation to poetic experience.

Elisabeth’s work can be viewed on her website.

Below are Jyl’s Artist Biography, her Artist Statement, along with 25 of her digital paintings.  We hope that you will take the time to read Jyl’s information and to take a look at her artwork.

Artist Biography:

An award winning and published artist, Jyl Blackwell has been creating art and music since her childhood. She has early beginnings as a pencil and charcoal artist as well as dabbling in pastels and watercolor. When she wasn’t creating works of art, she was singing and dancing on stage.

Jyl’s art sprang from a love of science and technology. It wasn’t until recent advances in software that she was able to form art and science into a process called Kinetic Flow Painting™. Kinetic is defined as relating to or resulting from motion (of a work of art) depending on movement for its effect. And that movement is created by the flow of the pixels. Swirling layers of gradient pixels are put into motion on the digital canvas. Often inspired by nature, dance and the human form, Jyl bring the abstract to real-life experiences and observations.

Jyl Blackwell is an internationally awarded artist and has shown her work in many exhibits in the United States. Her most recent digital paintings can be seen in galleries and exhibits in the Seattle area.

Artist Statement:

I have always loved all things creative. Since childhood, I have written music and poetry, enjoyed working with textiles and fiber arts, and telling compelling stories through photography and traditional art mediums. I found a whole new method of expression when I discovered digital art.

My art arrived on the scene when I was able to form art and technology into a process I call Kinetic Flow Painting™. Swirling layers of gradient pixels are put into motion and painted on the digital canvas. Sometimes these layers reside on their own and sometimes they are incorporated into photographic or digital collages.

Several software programs are used to create each elemental note that is composed into one cohesive piece. Often, new advances in software send me in an entirely new direction but always with the same process of extracting the essence of the piece through color and curve, form and light - music for the eyes.
