"Open" Art Exhibition - September 2015

Our art competition for August 2015 was the 5th Annual “Open” competition and 2D and 3D artists (including photography) from around the world were called upon to make online submissions for possible inclusion into the Gallery’s September 2015 online group art exhibition.  The “Open” is a no theme online art competition whereby artists were asked to submit their best representational or abstract artworks on any subject matter.

The Guest Judge for this competition is Jeffrey Shonkwiler is the Founder of Florida Artists Registry, a member-supported arts organization, created in 2000. He is past director of Gallery at Avalon Island where he curated over 60 exhibits.  He has judged numerous indoor and outdoor exhibits. He has served on the board of directors for the Downtown Arts District and the Maitland Art Center Associates board. ArtistsRegistry.com.  The gallery would like to thank Jeffrey for his help in judging the finalists for the 2015 "Open" Art Exhibition.

Here are his thoughts on entries, “I found the quality of artwork to be excellent. The variety of subject matter was intriguing. I like the format of this art contest in that it allowed me to view all of the artwork from many different artists in a leisurely, yet thorough manner. Selecting the winners was a bit of a challenge as the styles were so different, yet each had much to offer. I found this to be a very enjoyable experience. Congratulations to all the artists who participated.”

This art competition and the submission process for the artists began in July 2015 and concluded on August 27, 2015. The gallery received 734 entries from 19 different countries from around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany,  Ireland, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Saint Maarten, Singapore, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom.  In addition, the gallery received entries from 34 different states and the District of Columbia.

Due to the volume of entries, the gallery felt that it was necessary to create three (3) media categories, in order to make the judging and the results fair for this competition. The media categories are Painting & Other, Photography & Digital and 3 Dimensional Art. In addition, for this particular competition, we have an overall Winning Artists Category, which is the “best of the best” and consists of the ten (10) best entries from the 3 media categories.

We also included Special Merit awards and Special Recognition awards for outstanding art this month. The artists in either of these groups could have easily been included in the upper tier of our winners, as their art was also exceptional.  We hope that you will take the time to also enjoy their beautiful artwork too.

To view the artwork in each media category, click on a thumbnail image and that will take you to the Slide Show, which contains larger images. In order to leave the Slide Show at any time, just click on the X in the upper right-hand corner in order to escape and that will take you back to the thumbnails.

All winning entries will now be featured on the Light Space & Time website for the month of September 2015 and thereafter, the artworks and links to the artist’s websites will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives. Congratulations to our artists who made our “Open” Art Exhibition so successful this month. At any time, we invite our winning artists and other interested visitors to link their websites to the Gallery’s archive page for further ongoing promotion.
